The story that is sucking up all the oxygen right now is the story about the old friend of Donald Trump’s who just had a bail hearing to determine if he would stay in jail until his trial on multiple charges of sex trafficking.
Oh, wait, sorry, that’s the OTHER Trump scandal that got chased off of the front page after Trump uttered racist tweets suggesting that Democratic women of color in the House of Representatives who criticize him should go back to their “broken and crime infested countries.” All four of his targets are U.S. citizens and three of them were born in the United States.
The statement has elicited nearly universal condemnation from Democrats and even a few whispers of dissent from a few Republicans, although not any of the congressional leadership among Republicans.
Now, House Democrats, under the inept leadership of Wrong Way Pelosi, will pass a resolution heroically condemning his racist tweets — but not impeaching him.
This is ridiculous. The legal standard for removal by impeachment is criminal conduct. Uttering racist tweets cannot be a crime in our republic under our Constitution. But the decision to initiate impeachment is necessarily political. The Founders gave the House of Representatives the “sole power of impeachment.”
The Mueller report detailed plenty of criminal activity to justify removal. If overt racism from the racist in chief is not political reason enough to initiate impeachment, will anything ever be?
Time to wake up and smell the cat food, Nancy.
Pull the impeachment trigger.
