Donald Trump recently elicited such widespread criticism that even he noticed, which is quite remarkable for someone as self absorbed as he is.
He notoriously suggested that he would accept help from foreign persons or governments in the 2020 election if they offered. The director of the Federal Elections Commission issued an emphatic statement that federal law prohibits candidates for office from accepting help from foreigners. Trump tried his usual tricks, claiming that the “fake media” were misrepresenting his statement, but he was pretty clear that he does not much favor calling the FBI.
In his recent statement announcing the closure of the special counsel’s office, Robert Mueller finished with this, “I will close by reiterating the central allegation of our indictments — that there were multiple, systematic efforts to interfere in our election. That allegation deserves the attention of every American. Thank you.” He also said he refrained from asserting that Trump had committed a crime because Department of Justice rules forbade him to do so.
Stunningly, Nancy Pelosi still doesn’t want to impeach Trump. It is undoubtedly still the case that Republicans in the Senate are unlikely to remove him.
But it is blindingly obvious that impeachment hearings in the House would be by far the best way to focus “the attention of every American” on Trump’s past, ongoing, and likely future crimes. Pelosi has suggested that she wants to beat Trump in the 2020 election, but she refuses to learn the obvious lesson of 2016 — it is entirely possible to inoculate most of the population against the sort of meddling in social media we saw last time by informing them about it. But Trump can win if foreign interference goes unchecked. This is much the same mistake Obama made in 2016 by not announcing the Russian meddling he knew about.
Nothing will get through to Trump, but shining a bright light onto his campaign may help slow down others who might be inclined to help him with his illegal activities, despite the multiple convictions Mueller achieved for Trump’s former accomplices.
But Pelosi holds enormous power here, and she increasingly looks like a total fool for not exercising it effectively.
She should begin an impeachment investigation immediately.
