Okay, this isn’t news. They never do anything else.
But right now, they have teed up a very specific lie. Right now, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is also the Lead Liar. He is currently pushing the Big Republican Lie that the enormous and growing federal budget deficit is “a bipartisan problem: unwillingness to address the real drivers of the debt by doing anything to adjust those programs to the demographics of America in the future.”
This is rank nonsense, of course. For nearly a year, Paul Ryan, the supposed intellectual of the Republican Party (what does that say about them?) was the point boy, the Lead Liar, making the claim that the only solution to huge budget deficits was to slash Social Security and Medicare.
This has always been a barefaced lie, on two grounds. One, Social Security and Medicare have their own, independent revenue streams that do not depend on general tax revenue and have no impact on the federal budget.
Second, the real reason the deficit is growing is that Republicans keep enacting irresponsible, unnecessary tax cuts.
The Republicans are now furiously trying to avoid having to take any responsibility for the huge mess they have created with the federal budget. McConnell’s lies are pure election season propaganda.
Again, lying is their default mode, so no one should ever believe anything they say, but it gets worse when an election is coming up, and this election is especially bad because the stakes are so high.
