From the perspective of ego, awakening is strange, confusing, and maybe a bit terrifying. The ego cannot understand why anyone would want to awaken.
The impulse to awaken at all is itself evidence of not self because if your ego were as fully in command of your being as it wants you to think that it is, if it occupied the field of who you are completely, you would never think to awaken at all.
