Consciousness is the Sea we Swim In

The Buddha

Maybe you’re happy with your thoughts, no matter where they come from. If so, good for you. Have you meditated much? If you do, I suspect you will start to notice some thoughts you are really not happy with.

I have thoughts that I find intrusive. Again, I have no idea where they come from.

But how do I know that? Even if you are lost in thought, even if you have never heard of Buddhism, even if you have never meditated, even if you think this is all bunk, you are making knowledge claims and you have to explain how you know what you know.

The simple, obvious answer is consciousness.

You can’t, I can’t, notice thoughts from within thoughts. The whole project only works at all, and I know it works, because of consciousness, a distinct, supervening awareness independent of thoughts that offers a platform I can crawl onto, you can crawl onto, to watch the parade of thoughts going by.

We crawl onto the platform to watch the parade by meditating. Eventually, we stop watching the parade and notice how nice and peaceful the platform is.

Enjoy your consciousness.

Help spread the word.
